It is rather frivolous and primitive to try to constrain artistes to do things in the manner of their colour, race or birth place instead of allowing them create as they possibly can. We don't overrule the fact that some artistes don't know what form they are good at and may "just jump into any popular bandwagon" (which may happen to be alien to their own nativity) rather than doing what they have a "natural" passion and liken for and are good at. Certain so-called "white" boys don't accept so-called "black" boys performing Rock music because they "resent" the idea that they may dominate the genre. Yet some so-called "blacks" discourage other blacks from playing Rock music because they claim it's "white music"... Hmmmm! Born in today's world, even in a suburb of what some have called a third world country like Nigeria, nurtured with milk and honey packed and served even from the choicests across the world; and taught and groomed by teachers and great men from the world over, even brought right into my father's living room by books, the radio, the television and now the Internet, I am more and more a native of the world. A boisterious blend of every part. With some trace of what is race (not racist), colour, style and form from every part ingrained. Whatever genre I choose to compose and play is for me a product of how I have felt and chosen to express the emotion and sentiments borne in the lyrics. And it could be Rock. Pop. Roots reggae. Some form of R&B. African beats. Jazz... whatever. It’s what I can do. My originality. And I believe it's beautiful. Marketable. Prosperous... Yet on a similar pedestal, (much as I believe that man is both spirit and flesh: by which I mean that he has both a soul and a terrestial body) I do not qualify myself a gospel musician (Matter-of-fact, I am not a musician! At all!) or a secular one, no. I write and compose songs out of inspiration of experience, knowledge or some abstract thought. And so it could be after the Lord. After some Babe, some guy, my mum, Lagos, Kelechi Isiodu, campus cults, life, survival,... and every other thing imaginable. Well, I guess it's on the pedestal of these reasoning that the compilation and collection of Robert Lifeshots' Lyrics are called "CounterPOISE!" |
