About Us... ![]() StateHOPE! plans new StageMight production
| ![]() The native style, form and content of acts like Lagbaja! and Femi Kuti may not only have made them individually distinguished and accepted as Nigerian/African acts, but may also have created a style and form to be anticipated of acts from this part of the world on the international scene. Even here today, this expectation is high and rife. The avalanche of young music acts and buffs into Afrobeat (the music genre founded, pioneered and made internationally recognized by the late Fela Anikulapo Kuti), including Femi and Lagbaja both of whom play their own respective styles of the genre, is a ready testimony to this development. ![]() ![]() Although Reggae is considered a native of Africa, this genre with antecedents from Jamaica is common and popular amongs locals here and has distinguished some of its exponents like Majek Fashek and Ras Kimono locally and internationally. Reggae has become so common and native here that varities of it now abound with acts like Daddy Showkey, Baba Fryo and Daddy Fresh; all hailing from the Lagos suburb and "ghetto" called Ajegunle. ![]() Rap and Hip-Hop founded and made popular by African Americans and thus considered "black" music is yet another genre which some acts of today are getting accepted and distinguished by. There are also local variations of this music style which have become accepted and successful here. Acts like Plantashun Boiz and Tony Tetuila are just two typical samples. Though some other acts have not been well accepted here because their content and style are too copy-cat like of Hip-Hop and Rap acts from the US. However some acts here have proved to Hip-Hop and rap lovers worldwide that what must be classified pure and "tight" Hip-Hop and Rap music must not have an African American face or an anti-social and anti-value content that has marked the celebrated works of most popular Rap and Hip-Hop acts from the US known this part of the globe. The emergence of groups like Kush and even most notably SWATROOT of Payback Tyme Records undoubtedly underscores this point. The Rap and Hip-Hop style, form and content of "6ft+", RuleClean, Terry Tha Rapman, Mode IX, El Dee and other acts from SWATROOT or Payback Tyme records are remarkably pure, tight and yet original and native to this time and place. Kush, a gospel quartet and R&B group has had its works sampled and appreciated even as far as the US where they were rated "The Nigerian group about to create an international sensation" by the Los Angeles Weekly. Mr. Kenny Ogungbe used to be the GM of DAAR Comunications, operators and owners of AIT and RayPower radio, but today he is the CEO/MD of Kennis Music and Prime Time Entertainment. While with DAAR he was also a tv and radio presenter who did quite a lot to promote the development of young and serious music acts. But I dare say not as much as he is doing today as the CEO/MD of his own outfit. It may appear that his duties while with DAAR were too much for him to have played as good a role as he is playing today in the music scene here, I think not. Whatever made him leave DAAR is a blessing for the music scene. He has filled part of a vacuum here that is in dire need to be filled for the good of the music industry. Mr. Ogungbe is not just a music buff or some nouve riche seeking the latest money spinning business to put his coins into. He has a vision for what he is doing. He has proved his passion for music since the days of AIT Jamz. And after AIT/DAAR...? PTE CloseUp CountDown, PTE Grammy Awards scenes and exclusive interviews, Prime Time Jamz, sensational music video productions of brilliant quality, and there's the forthcoming "Kennis Music Easter Fiesta 2002"... and the list goes on. I must be sounding like a goon of Kenny's. I think not again. Or perhaps the guy is just too loud about whatever he does that it's impossible to notice anyone else but him here. Again, I think not. Kenny's just one of the many guys whose entry and love for music has greatly benefited the music presence here. His music recording label is one of the most auspicious today, doling out new music sensations from it's stables. ![]() There is a growing degree of professionalism here to that is ofcourse doing also a tremendous good to the industry. Though recording companies may still be accused of double dealing in records sales, but by promoting and fostering the development of budding talents, and the emergence of individuals or groups to manage and market artistes is a most welcome development. Companies like ZMirage into the business of staging shows are equally getting serious about their own business and as such the quality of work produced here. On a final note, I'd like to say that music -and not the copy-cat thing- whether it be R&B, Rap, Hip-Hop, Reggae, Afrobeat or Jazz is thriving here in Nigeria and thriving well. However, for those of us who believe that music neither has colour nor race, we cannot help but pray that soon someone from here will give us brilliant music in yet one more genre. Rock! There is quite a followership of this simple and invigorating music genre here. Kudos Nigerian Music acts! Kudos to the Nigerian Music scene! ![]() |
